Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese islands, with an area of circa 1400 square kilometres and 78 kilometres long and 35 kilometres at its widest point. Kos is the second largest island in the Dodecanese and has a fertile landscape. The island is also the birthplace of the father of medicine, Hippocrates (460-377 BC). The island has many archaeological remains from the time it was a major power in the region.
