I’m Marius, and from my home in Romania, Athens is ninety minutes away by air — closer than New York is to Chicago — and Greece has been my summer home for as long as I can remember. Not a bucket-list destination. Not a once-in-a-lifetime splurge. A neighbor’s Greece: the one you find on your third visit and your tenth, when you’ve stopped photographing the sunsets and started noticing which tavernas the fishermen actually eat at.
I’ve done the trip every way it can be done: flown into Athens, sailed in on the ferries, and — best of all — driven down through the Balkans in my own car. Ask me about border crossings.
